My Review
Burning State was sold to me as an Action Thriller, and it certainly was!
The British off-grid ex-spy ex-special ops man, James Ryker, who I hadn’t met before (even though this is book 14 in a series) certainly hit the ground running into a high-octane, high-violence, high-stakes thriller, with the future of the whole of America and it's citizens at stake.
I don’t know his backstory, or indeed his deep motivations, but Ryker took it in his stride when he was asked to take on a mission that was not just potentially dangerous, and high-risk, but also likely off-grid, with no protection if it all went wrong.
His cover was that he was a PI, investigating a missing girl (a governor’s daughter), but he knew there was much more to it, even though his boss - and the governor - seemed to be keeping him the dark for some reason.
His technique took a leaf straight out of the James Bond playbook - he didn’t bother to hide who he was, he used his own name (although we were told that had changed many years before), and he walked straight into potentially violent situations (which turned out to be violent…) many more times than would be deemed sensible.
Ryker could handle himself well. Aided by two women, he follows clues that include a far-right group exploiting the country’s divisions, a potential coup, and the super-baddy - a very capable man with a dark soul and a deep grudge about how he’d been treated.
It was a fun read, with no boring parts at all. If you like political intrigue, high-stakes action, a bit of violence (but no real gore), then this is for you. If you’re looking for something a bit deeper, it has it's moments (divisions, hatred, being let down by government, corruption), but it doesn’t dwell. This is more an action book than anything else.
All in all, the novel delivered all that it promised: high-stakes action.
