Did you know?
Nicola was also known as Nicole - the Norman French name for Lincoln, the place where she ruled the castle. Her father must have named her for it! As she was Norman-English, there’s a fair chance that her family called her by that name.
Her formal name in Latin for documents was written as Nicholaa.
And the name ‘de la Haye’, which derived from her father’s line from La Haye du Puits in Normandy, was also spelled Haie (they weren’t very consistent with their spellings then!).
